A child protection activist has backed calls for children not to sit on the laps of shopping centre Santas for Christmas photos.

Prompted by a debate among parents on social media, Bravehearts founder Hetty Johnston spoke out about the need for children to feel safe and not feel pressured to sit on Santa’s knee.

“The directive would be for children to stand beside, unless parents or children request to sit on his knee,” she told the .

“Shopping centres have duty of care to protect children on premises.

“We teach kids it’s ok to say no if they don’t feel safe.

“This means not having to sit on anyone’s lap, including family members, if they don’t want to.”

In 2011, sweeping new changes were brought into schools in the UK.

Parents who offered to dress up as Santa were told they must not allow students to sit on their laps and they cannot be left alone with them.

Russell Hobby, the general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, told the the new laws meant many of its members had decided it was better if Father Christmases avoided all physical contact with children.

I did a stint as Santa for a local Charity, in my more rotund days.

It was policy to not even touch the kid let alone have the kid sit on your knee.

We had a little chair next to Santa's and no one thought anything of it...

Hardly a big deal is it?

Couldn't agree with it more. Good to see people taking strides to do what they can to protect the young and innocent.

The key words here are 'if they don't want to'. Sounds perfectly reasonable to me. Not that there can be many parents willing to upset their child in what should be a fun situation by forcing them to do something they clearly do not want to do.

I wouldn't let a kid of mine sit on Santa's knee as he must be massively sexually frustrated.

He's only allowed to come once a year.
